Pherson Associates’ services cover the full range of analytic activities, including building models, frameworks, and processes; collecting and arraying critical data; developing and applying analytic tools and techniques; honing writing and briefing skills; publishing books and pamphlets; and maximizing the analytic power of the individual, the group, and the organization. The principal officers, senior consultants, and almost all instructors have extensive experience in the Intelligence Community.
Pherson Associates specializes in providing training in advanced analytic techniques to analysts involved in basic analytic tradecraft, counterterrorism, counterintelligence, denial and deception, and homeland security. Instruction focuses on providing useful tools for the everyday analyst, in government and the private sector, to identify and overcome mind-sets, stimulate creative thinking, discover “unknown unknowns,” develop conceptual frameworks, instill rigor into the analytic process, and reduce the chance of surprise. Pherson Associates also provides training in both basic and advanced writing and briefing. Pherson Associates developed and is teaching workshops on analytic tradecraft, writing, and briefing skills to all analysts entering the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as well as to more experienced FBI analysts. We have developed and taught similar 1, 2, and 3-day workshops for analysts and managers at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), National Security Agency (NSA), National Drug Intelligence Center (NDIC), Department of Transportation, and in the Intelligence Community.
Planning and Analysis
Pherson Associates principals have successfully managed a variety of challenging problems and issues within the U.S. Government, advising on strategic planning, program development, budget justification, and cross-organizational collaboration for DHS, NGA, the Army Science Board, Assistant Director of Central Intelligence for Collection (ADCI/C), Office of the Director for National Intelligence (ODNI), and the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO).
Pherson Associates has extensive experience organizing and facilitating workshops, seminars, and conferences. Our specialty is crafting tailored workshops for government and non-government personnel who need to get “out-of-the-box,” challenge their mind-sets, and recommend new policies or strategic directions for their organizations. Pherson Associates also has extensive experience in facilitating alternative futures workshops that typically engage 30-50 experts for several days in developing a list of key factors or drivers and then weighing the drivers differently to generate a set of alternative futures. Pherson Associates has facilitated such workshops for the DHS, State Department Global Futures Forum, the ADCI/C, the ODNI, and other elements of the Intelligence Community.
Analytic Tools and Techniques
Pherson Associates working with its sister company Globalytica, LLC, has developed several simple, but elegant, web-based tools that enhance an analyst’s critical thinking skills. Building on the experience gathered over many years from teaching analytic tools and techniques to IC analysts, Pherson Associates has developed a toolbox of computer-assisted analytic tools and techniques that allow analysts to generate multiple hypotheses, validate scenario indicators and use the Analysis of Competing Hypotheses Methodology in a collaborative, web-based environment. Detailed descriptions of each tool can be found at the Tools tab.
Report Writing and Editing
Pherson Associates draws from a cadre of highly regarded former Intelligence Community analysts and managers who have well-honed writing and editing skills. They also bring years of experience working on such regions as the Middle East and South Asia, Russia, Europe, Africa, and Latin America and possess functional expertise in political analysis, economics, analytic methodologies, and information systems.
